Practice: Grounding Into Winter: Rest, Presence, and the Space Between
Start the year without the sprint. We invite you into January as a threshold—a quiet space between what has ended and what’s still becoming—so you can begin not with pressure, but with presence. Instead of chasing clarity, we guide you to feel supported, breathe deeper, and listen for what’s already unfolding beneath the surface.
We start with a gentle reset: find a supportive position, notice the weight of your body, and let gravity hold more of you. With slow inhales and lengthened exhales, the nervous system shifts toward ease. Then we move into an earth-rooted visualization, extending “roots” from feet, hips, and back into steady, dark soil. This winter-paced imagery helps release urgency, increase interoception, and cultivate the kind of stability that makes decisions clearer and commitments sustainable. Softening the shoulders and jaw, you’ll feel stress patterns loosen while the breath cues safety from the inside out.
Across the practice, we trade hustle for regulation and replace self-critique with trust. You’ll hear gentle reminders like “you’re not behind” and “you don’t need a plan,” not as slogans, but as nervous system medicine that lets you meet the year on honest terms. We close with a simple affirmation—“I am supported even when I am still”—to anchor the lesson that rest is not a reward; it’s a resource. If January has felt like a starting gun, this session offers another way: rooted, steady, and ready when your inner timing says yes.
If this practice helps you exhale, share it with a friend who needs permission to slow down, tap follow for more guided grounding, and leave a review to let us know what shifted for you.

January is often treated like a starting line, a moment to rush forward, reinvent ourselves, and have everything all figured out. But energetically, January is something else entirely. It's a threshold, a space between what was and what's still becoming. This month on the Modern Zen Collective Podcast, we're honoring that in-between space. Through conversation, grounding, and deep rest, we're inviting you to slow down, soften the pressure, and listen more closely to what's unfolding beneath the surface. You don't need to clarify yet. You don't need a plan. You're not behind. You're right on time. So join us this January as we explore the threshold and begin the year with presence, not pressure. Hello, friends. Take a moment to settle into a position that feels supportive for your body. Whether that's seated or lying down, there's nothing you need to fix, change, or understand right now. This practice isn't about getting anywhere. It's about arriving right here, right now. Winter invites us into stillness, into quieter listening, into rest that doesn't need to be earned. Allow your eyes to gently close or soften your gaze. And take one slow inhale through the nose and a long exhale through your mouth. Take another breath in and exhale slowly, letting your body soften. Now bring your awareness to the places where your body is making contact with the surface beneath you. Notice the weight of your body pressing down. How gravity is holding you without any effort. There's nothing you need to hold up right now. You are being held. Imagine these points of contact beneath you gently widening, as if your body is being supported by Mother Earth herself. Feel the steadiness of that support, the reliability of it, the trust you have. Now imagine gentle roots extending from the base of your body, from your feet, your hips, your back, slowly reaching downward into Mother Earth towards her core. There's no rush. Let these roots move at the pace of winter. They move through soil that is dark, rich, and quiet. Soil that knows how to rest. Soil that knows how to wait. With each exhale, allow your roots to sink deeper. With each inhale, feel stability rising upward into your body. No need to change it. Just notice the rhythm. If it feels supportive, lengthen your exhale slightly, inviting your nervous system into ease, into rest. Winter doesn't ask us to push. Let your shoulders soften. Let your jaw unclench. Bring awareness back to your whole body. Grounded, supported, and steady. Notice any subtle shifts in your breath, your body, your sense of presence. Now silently repeat these phrases. I am supported even when I am still. And when it feels right, can slowly flutter your eyes open and carry this grounded steadiness with you as you move throughout your day.
